11 Things You Should Know When You Start a Better Life

The hell with it, I thought after I hung up the phone. I didn’t even want the stupid job anyways. They rejected me and of course they did. I am a bad liar. I can’t pretend that I like something if I don’t. How can I write an enthusiastic letter of application to a company if I think that the jobs sucks. More importantly, why would I? I decided to change my life.

Better Life

When I was 16, I had to choose what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. That’s what society told me. I had to choose a study. I chose to study marketing and communication. Why? I have no clue. I had to choose something.

How was I supposed to know what I wanted to be? I was 16. Busy figuring out other things. How I could let my zits disappear and how I could talk to girls for example. At that age, my future was still far away.

Some people are lucky enough to have chosen the right path when they were younger. They already knew what their passions and dreams were. I wasn’t one of them. I didn’t know it was an option.

For a long time, I have lived like a bouncing ball. Not in control and wondering what the next thing was that I would hit. I didn’t set any goals and I had no direction. I didn’t take charge of my life.

Don’t get me wrong, I like my life so far. I have no regrets. With no specific direction I ended up all over the world. I have seen and done cool things. It brought me to where I am right now. But I couldn’t live my life like that forever. Drifting and running away. I didn’t want to live my life like that forever. Life is worth more than that and I knew it. I started to design my future.

After I hung up that phone, I made myself a promise. I’m not going to waste any more time on things I do not truly like. I’m going to find out what my true dreams are and I’m going to make them reality. I’m going to be me.

I’ve been living up to that promise ever since. I have found my passions and I’m living them. I’m writing this blog for example. I’m aware of the things I like and I consciously choose what I allow to exist in my life and what not. The quality om my life increased significantly. I feel much happier, alive and free.

Do you want to do the same? Here are few things you should think about when you start a better life. They might help you along your way.

1. Your mind is a universe of possibilities

Your mind is the most powerful tool you will ever own. It is amazing. Your possibilities are countless. You can literally be anyone you want to be — within the laws of physics of course. Your mind is a creator and with it, you can create every life you want.

2. Everything you focus on, will exist in your life

Although the mind is complicated, it works very simple in a way. Focus on something and it will be a part for your life. Ignore it, and it won’t. When you start paying attention to certain things they become your reality. This way, you can create the world you want to live in.

3. Everything you give the room and care to grow, will grow

Allow something in your life and it will be there. Allow it on a regular base and it will become a part of your world. With every thought, you create room for existence. So the more you focus on something, the more space you create for its existence. The more attention I pay to surfing for example, the bigger part it will be of my life.

4. You will get better at what you practice

Talking about surfing. Chances are small that you can catch big waves the first time you are in the water with a board. But do it more often and you will get better. Keep trying and eventually you will ride the big waves. Repetition will bring you to the next level.

5. The one who is often preventing you from following your dreams is you

But what if you want to be a surfer and you are afraid of sharks? What if you are so afraid that you don’t dare to go in the water? You will never become a surfer. But many people are surfers. They aren’t eaten by sharks and chances are small that they will.

The only way that fear can exist is by creating doom scenarios for the future. This is something we do with our own mind. And it’s stupid because how can we know what will happen in the future?

6. If you are going to fight your life, you will never win

‘Fighting for’ may bring you anywhere but ‘fighting against’ is pointless. If you are going to fight against things in your life you will never win. Nothing will ever change. When you fight something, you allow its existence and therefore it will always be a part of your life. You create the battle yourself and therefore, you will never win. If you don’t like something in your life. Accept it, let it go and change.

7. You will get stuck without goals

Without goals, I don’t have a clue what I am doing and probably neither do you. Without goals you are floating in an empty universe. Maybe fun for a while but not forever.  Floating in an empty universe is the same as being stuck. The amount of space around you is irrelevant because you have nowhere to go to. You need a focus point in order to be able to choose a direction. You need a goal to get somewhere.

8. In order to grow, you need to set goals

Also, setting yourself goals can make you grow as a person. When you set yourself a goal, you create an opportunity to make yourself proud. Once you have achieved a goal, you have showed yourself that you can do things. Your self-esteem will grow. Besides that, once you have achieved a goal, you can push yourself to the next level.

9. In order to grow, you need to stretch your mental boundaries

If you never challenge yourself to do something new, your life will always stay the same. If you never dare to step out of your circle, your safety zone will become your prison. Over time, it will be harder and harder to escape.

By stretching your mental boundaries, your world of possibilities will automatically grow bigger. A challenge enables victory and a victory equals personal growth. Dreams may seem to be far away first but when you enlarge your inner landscape they may become well within reach.

10. Without a good health, you will achieve less

What do you do when you don’t feel well? Probably not so much. When your body is sick or tired it will switch back to survival mode. It doesn’t want to move mountains, it wants rest. It’s for your own protection an luckily it works this way. But when your body is in survival mode, personal development is of little importance.

Therefore, in order to create a better life and more happiness, it’s important to have a good health. Eat healthy, sleep well, exercise. Make sure you are full of energy so you can conquer the world.

11. Real change takes time

Old habits die hard. Mick Jagger already sang it in one of his songs and it is true. What you have learned takes a long time to unlearn and what is new takes a long time to become normal. Repetition is the key. Whatever you do, whatever you have started, don’t give up.

It is hard to notice change in your life because you are always you and the process of change is often slow.  But persevere and there will be a moment when you look back on your life and think: Damn, things did really change, I do live a better life.
