In my hometown Delft in Holland there is a French bakery. It is in a small street next to a church and they make delicious baguettes, croissants and pain-au-chocolats . I like to go there sometimes to buy a croissant and have it for breakfast together with some milk and coffee. When I enter the bakery it almost feels like I am in France, almost! They speak French, it looks French but the moment I walk out of the door I am just in Holland again. So those trips to France are always short and not to mention fake. But why am I actually not going for the real deal? Why am I not going to France? It is not like I have to cross oceans. France means summer to me. When I was younger I always used to go there with my family to spent the holidays. It has been a long time since I have been there in the summer and I would like to see it again. I also feel that it is time for some action! I want to hit the road and use Europe’s summer to travel around.
This brought me to an excellent idea and is the reason why I made myself a promise. I promised myself that the next croissant I am going to eat will be in France and let’s make it a little bit over the top, the next croissant I am going to eat will be in France on top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Now, just taking a bus to Paris and buying a croissant would not make sense, it would be too easy and also a bit ridiculous. I want to add something to the journey to feel closer to the country and the best way to do this is by traveling slow. I also want to do something I have never done before and to give myself a bit of a challenge. This brought me to another idea, something I actually want to do for a long time. Traveling on my longboard!
In my life I have traveled in many different ways. By car, by train, by plane, etcetera but never on my longboard. And I love to cruise around on my longboard! It is such a fun and free way to move around so why not? Why not go to Paris on my longboard? So that is what I am going to do, I am going to make the more than 500 km trip to Paris on my longboard and reward myself with a real French croissant on the Eiffel Tower? Sounds stupid but fun right?
I have not got a clue what to expect because I have never done such a thing before. I think it is going to take me around 8 days but it can also be much longer. I will travel from Holland through Belgium and eventually to Paris. The problem is that I cannot bring a lot of stuff with me like a tent because it would be too heavy. So I have to pack a minimum and I will see what happens along the way. I will try to couchsurf whenever I can but it is also possible that I have to sleep outside under the stars in my sleeping bag. I don’t know yet but that is what makes it an adventure. To give you an impression, this is the route I am going to take.
I think it will be a great way to experience a feeling of freedom and I am really looking forward to it. I will only make little preparation and all I need is good weather now. Wish me luck!
